Lately I've been very open in sharing embarassing childhood anecdotes, and I figured I might as well bring them to an even more public platform and start sharing them on this blog.  The first story that I share with you tells the tale of one of my first forays into lyric writing.

You might be amused and/or surprised to learn that in elementary school/junior high I was part of "Connections", our school's "gifted and talented" program.  In junior high we did a simulated shuttle launch, and while I had no affinity for space travel, I did fancy myself a budding songwriter.  Since I could contribute nothing as far as my science and math skills went, my friend Jo Anna and I "wrote" a song about John Glenn, which we asked to perform for extra credit.  Today, for the first time ever, the lyrics to this tune will appear, in their entirety, on the world wide web.

"John Glenn"-to the tune of "Are You That Somebody?" by Aaliyah
(*pound* indicates an emphatic pounding of fists on a table or desk)

John Glenn (*pound*)
We remember when he went into space, up there it was black-
Now (*pound*)
It's 1998 and he's finally going back- (*pound pound pound pound*)

*CHORUS*
His name is John Glenn! His name is John Glenn!
First name is John, last name is Glenn-
His name is John Glenn! His name is John Glenn!
J-O-H-N G-L-E-N-N
His name is John Glenn! His name is John Glenn!
First name is John, las name is Glenn-
His name is John Glenn, and we remember when!

I fully intend on submitting this the next time I apply for the BMI songwriter's workshop.
