Music recommendations from the checkout line...

I like to think that I have pretty cool music taste. If you look at my iTunes collection I have some pretty solid music and I try to keep up with Pitchfork and MYOKB and the like for new tuneness, so I had nothing to be ashamed of until I started downloading music that I heard at Walgreens.
Okay, so every Thursday afternoon at roughly 12:30 I make my weekly stop at Walgreens. My visits are leisurely ones and I amble down the aisles like I have all the time in the world. Walgreens plays very ambient music as you shop, and a few weeks ago I realized that they cycled through some soft rock favorites. I thought that was rather comical until last week when I realized that I always kind of perked up when one of the songs came on. When I made my trip to Walgreens today I was particularly attentive while listening to their easy listening shopping music and I prolonged my shopping trip to make sure that I was there to hear that song. When it started playing I made sure to take note of a few lyrics, then as soon as I got home I googled them to find out what the song was. The song was "Your Imagination", by Brian Wilson. This isn't awesome drug-addled Brian Wilson who wrote SMILE or even clean cut surfer-boy Brian Wilson who wrote all those songs about surfing and cars. This is I'm writing easy listening music for Walgreens stores in 1998 Brian Wilson.
I still went on the iTunes store and bought it. And I've been listening to it on repeat ever since. It's saccharine sweet and Beach Boys derivative, but dammit, it reminds me of happier times spent buying tampons and conditioner at "America's pharmacy.
I probably shouldn't mention that last week I also downloaded a Jack Johnson song that I heard playing at Shop Rite.
*ETA: Turns out that the father of a friend from high school actually co-wrote that Brian Wilson song. Weird.
