Ass Wednesday...

I'm not fond of Ash Wednesday.  Not for any sort of religous reasoning, but because I always, without fail, make an ass out of myself.  Even though I spent seven years in Catholicism classes I have retained very little knowledge of Catholic practices (maybe because I spent the majority of those years wishing I was Jewish) and I am never aware of when Catholic observances are coming up.  This Ash Wednesday was no different.  Even though I knew that yesterday was Fat Tuesday, I did not pick up on the fact that today would be Ash Wednesday.

I got on a train at 8 AM and was in class from 9:30-4:45, so it's not surprising that I didn't see anyone with ashes on their forehead all day.  Then after I left my final class, I was walking out of the main building and I saw a girl with what I thought was a large smear of dirt on her forehead.  Naturally, I winced in disgust/embarassment for her.  I kept walking and encountered another guy with a "dirt smear" on his forehead and I winced in disgust/embarassment, this time for myself.  These people didn't have dirty foreheads...well they did, but they weren't actually dirty, they were just covered in ash to alert us to the fact that the countdown was on to the resurrection of their savior.  And I made faces at them.  Because I'm an ass.  And a terrible Catholic.
